There’s something about pulling a pan of cinnamon rolls out of the oven that makes a kitchen feel like home. This version gives you all that gooey, cinnamon-swirled comfort but with a solid protein boost baked right in, so you’re not stuck choosing between a treat and something that actually fuels your day.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
These rolls taste just as indulgent as the classic version, but you get extra protein per roll thanks to a mix of Greek yogurt and protein powder in the dough. That means you can eat one for breakfast and actually feel satisfied instead of hungry again an hour later.
They’re also easier than you’d think. You don’t need a stand mixer or hours of babysitting the dough, and the whole process comes together with basic pantry staples plus one scoop of your favorite protein powder.
And honestly, the smell alone is worth it. Cinnamon and brown sugar baking in the oven is one of those things that just makes a house feel warm.
Ingredients You’ll Need
For the dough, you’ll want flour, a little sugar, instant yeast, salt, warm milk, an egg, melted butter, and a scoop of vanilla protein powder. The protein powder is what sets this recipe apart, so stick with a whey or a whey-casein blend since those tend to bake up softer than plant-based powders, which can sometimes leave the dough a bit dry or dense.
Greek yogurt goes into the dough too, and it does double duty. It adds moisture so the rolls stay soft, and it sneaks in even more protein without changing the flavor.
For the filling, you’re looking at softened butter, brown sugar, and plenty of cinnamon. Simple, but that’s the point. It’s the classic combo for a reason.
If you want to finish these off with a glaze, cream cheese, a touch of powdered sugar, a splash of milk, and vanilla extract will do the trick. You can also swap in a bit of extra protein powder into the glaze if you want to squeeze out a little more per serving.
Tips for the Best Results
Let the dough rise somewhere warm and draft-free. A turned-off oven with the light on works great if your kitchen runs cold.
When you roll out the dough, don’t stress about a perfect rectangle. A slightly uneven shape just means you’ll get rolls of different sizes, and nobody’s complaining about that.
Cut your rolls with unflavored dental floss or a sharp serrated knife instead of squishing them down with a regular knife. It keeps the spiral shape nice and tight instead of flattening it out.
Storage and Reheating
Once the rolls have cooled, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. If you want them to last longer, pop them in the fridge and they’ll be good for about five days.
To reheat, a few seconds in the microwave brings them right back to soft and gooey. If you want that fresh-baked texture again, a few minutes in a low oven works even better.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any protein powder in this recipe?
Whey or whey-casein blends work best for texture. Plant-based powders can work too, but the dough may turn out a little denser.
Do I need a stand mixer to make these?
Nope, you can absolutely mix and knead this dough by hand. It just takes a few extra minutes of effort.
Can I make the dough ahead of time?
Yes, you can prep the dough the night before and let it do its first rise in the fridge overnight, then shape and bake in the morning.
Why didn’t my rolls rise?
This usually comes down to yeast that’s either expired or was killed by milk that was too hot. Double check both before you start.
product: A stand mixer with a dough hook makes kneading this dough effortless, though mixing by hand works perfectly fine too.
