Why You’ll Love This Recipe
This is genuinely one of the simplest Creami recipes to pull off, even if you’re brand new to the machine. There’s no cooking, no tempering eggs, no fussing over a stovetop custard — you just whisk, freeze, and process. It’s also incredibly forgiving, so if your measurements are a little off, it still turns out creamy and scoopable.
And honestly, the flavor payoff is huge for how little effort it takes. You get that classic cookies and cream taste, with real chunks of cookie folded in at the end so every bite has crunch.
Ingredients You’ll Need
The base is simple: whole milk, heavy cream, sugar, and a splash of vanilla extract. That combo gives you the rich, creamy texture the Creami needs to process well. Don’t be tempted to swap in low-fat milk here — the fat content is what keeps the texture smooth instead of icy.
For the cookies, chocolate sandwich cookies are the obvious pick, and they really do work best. You can use the classic version or a store brand, whatever you’ve got in the pantry. Crush them roughly by hand or give them a few pulses in a food processor — you want small chunks, not dust, so they hold their texture once mixed in.
A pinch of salt rounds everything out and keeps the sweetness from feeling flat. If you want an extra malty depth, a spoonful of malted milk powder is a nice optional add-in, though it’s not required to make this taste great.
Tips for the Best Results
Freeze your base for a full 24 hours before processing. This isn’t a step you can rush — an under-frozen pint will spin unevenly and you’ll end up with a slushy mess instead of soft-serve texture.
Add your crushed cookies after the base has processed, not before freezing. Use the mix-in function or just fold them in by hand once the base is smooth and soft-serve consistency. This keeps the cookie pieces distinct instead of turning the whole thing gray and mushy.
If your pint comes out a bit too soft after mixing in the cookies, pop it back in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. It firms up fast and scoops beautifully once it’s had a little rest.
Storage and Reheating
This one’s not really a “reheating” situation since it’s ice cream, but storage matters a lot for texture. Keep the pint covered with its lid and stored in the back of the freezer, away from the door where temperature fluctuates most.
It’s best eaten within one to two weeks for that fresh, creamy texture. After that, ice crystals start to form and the cookies can go a little soft and lose their crunch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a dairy-free milk instead?
Yes, though you’ll want a higher-fat option like full-fat canned coconut milk or a barista-style oat milk. Lower-fat dairy alternatives tend to freeze icy instead of creamy in the Creami.
Why did my mixture turn out crumbly instead of smooth?
This almost always means the base wasn’t fully frozen for the full 24 hours, or it needs a respin. Crumbly texture right after the first cycle is normal — just run it again.
Can I make this ahead for a party?
Definitely. Make the base a day or two ahead, but wait to process and add the cookies until closer to serving time so the mix-ins stay crunchy.
Do I need the Ninja Creami specifically, or will any ice cream maker work?
This recipe is built around the Creami’s freeze-then-process method, so a traditional churn-style ice cream maker will need a different technique. If you only have a churn machine, you can still use this base, just follow your machine’s standard churning instructions instead.
